A Chaplet of St. Isaac the Syrian

Sign of the Cross

  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten,

Begotten of the Father before all ages, Light of Light, Very God of Very God,

Begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father,

by whom all things were made:

Who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven,

And was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,

and was made man;

And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate,

and suffered and was buried;

And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures;

And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;

And He shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead,

Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of Life,

Who proceedeth from the Father [and the Son],

Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified,

Who spake by the Prophets;

And I believe in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins.

I look for the Resurrection of the dead.

And the Life of the age to come.

Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.

Amen.

The Jesus Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

I.  The Worship of the Holy Trinity: A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

As my soul bows to the ground I offer to Thee with all my bones and with all my heart the worship that befits Thee. O glorious God, who dwelleth in ineffable silence, you have built for my renewal a tabernacle of love on earth where it is Thy good pleasure to rest, a temple made of flesh and fashioned with the most Holy Oil of the Sanctuary. Then Thou didst fill it with Thy holy presence so that all worship might be fulfilled in it, indicating the worship of the eternal persons of Thy Trinity, and revealing to the worlds which Thou hadst created in your grace an ineffable mystery, a power  which cannot be felt or grasped by any part of Thy creation that has come into being. In wonder at it, angelic beings are submerged in silence, awed at the dark cloud of this eternal Mystery and at the flood of Glory which issues from within this Source of wonder, for it receives worship in the sphere of silence from every intelligence that has been sanctified and made worthy of Thee.

Amen.

II.  For Peaceful Silence: A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

O Mystery exalted beyond every word and beyond silence, Who became human in order to renew us by means of Thy voluntary union with the flesh, reveal to me the path by which I may be raised up to Thy mysteries, traveling along a course that is clear and tranquil, free from the illusions of this world. Gather my mind into the silence of prayer, so that wandering thoughts may be silenced within me during that luminous converse of supplication and mystery-filled wonder.

Amen.

III.  The Grace of the Incarnate Christ: A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

May Thy most-holy body that was stretched upon the Cross elevate my mind, which has been lowered unto the earth by the demons. May Thy most-holy head, which Thou didst bow upon the Cross raise my head, which has been humiliated by the opposing demonic powers. May Thy most-holy hands which were nailed to the Cross by the transgressors raise me to Thee from the depth of destruction, just as Thy most-holy mouth hast promised. May Thy face which received blows and spitting by the impious illumine my face which has been defiled by sin. May Thy soul, which was upon the Cross and which Thou didst hand to the Father, lead me to Thee through Thy Grace.

Amen.

IV.  Compassion in Contrition: A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

At the door of Thy compassion do I knock, Lord; send aid to my scattered impulses which are intoxicated with the multitude of the passions and the power of darkness. Thou canst see my sores hidden within me: stir up contrition—though not corresponding to the weight of my sins, for if I receive full awareness of the extent of my sins, Lord, my soul would be consumed by the bitter pain from them. Assist my feeble stirrings on the path to true repentance, and may I find alleviation from the vehemence of sins through the contrition that comes of Thy Gift, for without the power of Thy Grace I am quite unable to enter within myself, become aware of my stains, and so, at the sight of them, be able to be still from great distraction.

Amen.

V.  Illumine Our Hearts & Save Our Souls: A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

Hold me worthy, O Lord, to behold Thy mercy in my soul before I depart from this world; may I be aware in myself at that hour of Thy comfort, along with those who have gone forth from this world in good hope. Open my heart, O my God, by your grace and purify me from any association with sin. Tread out in my heart the path of repentance, my God and my Lord, my hope and my boast, my strong refuge, by Whom may my eyes be illumined, and may I have understanding of Thy truth, O Lord. Hold me worthy, O Lord, to taste the joy of the gift of repentance, by which the soul is separated from cooperating with sin and the will of flesh and blood. Hold me worthy, O Lord, to taste this state, wherein lies the gift of pure prayer. O my Saviour, may I attain to this wondrous transition at which the soul abandons this visible world, and at which new stirrings arise on our entering into the spiritual world and the experience
of new perceptions.

Amen.

A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian

Lord Jesus Christ, my God: Heal the wounds of my soul through the wounds which Thou didst suffer. Cleanse my blood with Thine holy blood and unite my body with the fragrance of Thy life-giving body.

A Prayer of St. Isaac the Syrian to Our Lord Jesus Christ

O Lord Jesus Christ my God, the treasure of all good things: Grant Thou me perfect repentance and a fervent heart that I may wholeheartedly come forth to seek Thee. Without Thee, I will become estranged from all good things. Therefore, grant Thou me Thy Grace, O Good One. May the Father Who didst beget Thee from His bosom recreate in me the image of Thine icon. I have abandoned Thee; do not forsake me. I have separated myself from Thee; come forth to find me. And when Thou findest me, lead me into Thy pastures, and number me amongst the sheep of Thy select flock, and nurture me with Thy divine mysteries, which dwell within a pure heart, wherein the brilliance of Thy revelations are made manifest. This brilliance serves as consolation and refreshment for them who toil in sorrows and various dishonors on account of Thee. May we all be worthy of receiving this illumination, through Thy grace and compassion, O Jesus Christ our Savior, unto the ages of ages.

Amen.

Apolytikion of St. Isaac the Syrian

He that thundered on Sinai with saving laws for man hath also given thy writings as guides in prayer unto monks, O revealer of unfathomable mysteries; for having gone up in the mount of the vision of the Lord, thou wast shown the many mansions. Wherefore, O God-bearing Isaac, entreat the Saviour for all who venerate thee.

Kontakion of St. Isaac the Syrian

As an ascetic and God-bearer great in righteousness and an instructor of monastics do we honour thee, thou revealer of things sacred, and our protector. But, O Isaac, since thou hast great boldness with the Lord, intercede with Him for all of us who sing and cry to thee: Rejoice, O Father most wise in God.

Dismissal

Through the prayers of Thy Holy Ones, Lord Jesus Christ Our God, have mercy on us and save us, for as much as though art Good and lovest mankind.

Sign of the Cross

  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
